Book Summary :
What can we know about Jesus? Surely we can't draw up a biography of him or reconstruct his psychology. Still, between the bareness of a chimeric agnosticism and the illusion of naive literalism, it seems possible to discern the outline of a real life and the presence of a genuine person. This book sets out, first, to grapple with the question of mythology as posed by Bultmann and his followers. The New Testament presents Jesus as a divine person, the Son of God. Must we not shatter this idol, some ask, in order to rediscover faith? This is the problem of Jesus' personality and the way it reveals and communicate itself. To discuss these matters, we must necessarily pass through the consciousness of Jesus — a dangerous undertaking, since the word is ambiguous and the reality is infinitely difficult to pinpoint. And yet the event related in the gospels has to have been truly lived by it has to have been his conscious life and death. Such a demonstration seems feasible from a study of the gospel texts which take into account the questions of exegesis and the values of spiritual experience. It underscores the profound coherence in the language of the gospels and show how God reveals himself in the countenance and the words of a man. In doing so, this important work of Christology provides guidance in the reading of the gospels and the insight into the mystery of Jesus.
